The Buffalo Commons
Written by biscuit on April 21, 2008 – 5:42 pm -When I’ve recovered from my Mosaic trial (which I’ve come to see this bout of illness as), and come to terms with more emotional issues (like happening on details in print of the death of our student who was victim of a hit and run), I want us to sit down and discuss the Poppers’ 1987 essay, The Great Plains: From Dust to Dust.
But that will be in a few days.

Very interesting article, biscuit. The Plains have a special spot in my soul, having lived in Wyoming, and turning them back to buffalo country would simply be too good to be true. Mankind has lived on the grasslands for thousands of years without upsetting the delicate balance of this fragile ecosystem - that is, until the most recent settlers arrived - so, perhaps a radical land use change is the only option. It would be unprecedented in scale, though, creating more pressure on urban areas east and west of the plains… though rapidly changing climate might force our hands.. Food for thought..
Yes, I’ve read the article too (OK, I grazed it, but will read thoroughly later on once Biscuit posts the piece). Another nail in the ecological coffin, it seems.
“Grazed” it?
Bookmarking to read later and looking forward to discussion.
Yeah, sometimes I feel like a ruminant!
I think it’s workable. We have small scale evidence of its “workability” here. In a few days - when I find my glasses again - I want to talk about exactly that.
I’m ruminating (!!) on a longer piece about it. It will be a few days. But I wanted to get that out there because - well, because I tink it’s under-known and under-appreciated, but well worth consideration. There’s some buffalo commons stuff going on here, and it’s been very, very successful - and that’s what I want to discuss: how it actually works and, so far, has stood the test of time.
