A knowledgeable official said the Massachusetts Democrat was in the hospital after suffering stroke-like symptoms. The official declined to be identified by name, citing the sensitivity of the events.

Kennedy spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter confirmed in a statement that Kennedy went to Cape Cod Hospital on Saturday morning “after feeling ill at his home.” After discussion with his doctors in Boston, Kennedy was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for further examination.

“He is currently under evaluation that information will be released as it becomes available,” she said.

Hyannis Fire Lt. Bill Rex told The Associated Press that a 911 call came in from the Kennedy family compound at 8:19 a.m. A man was transported to Cape Cod Hospital and transferred by air at 10:10 a.m. from Barnstable Municipal Airport to Massachusetts General.

David Reilly, a spokesman for Cape Cod Hospital, said that Kennedy was brought to the hospital at about 9 a.m. and stayed for about an hour before being flown by helicopter to the Boston hospital. He said he could not comment on Kennedy’s condition or treatment because of medical privacy laws. Will keep up with the updates.

Update:

BOSTON — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the lone surviving son in a famed political family who helped define national Democratic Party politics, suffered at seizure at his Cape Cod home on Saturday and was recovering in good spirits at a Boston hospital.

Kennedy, 76, was where he was “conscious, talking, joking with family,” who quickly surrounded him after he was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital, spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said.

Ted Kennedy has been the most consistent voice for basic progressive values in Congress for the last, what? Forty years? Sadly, he can’t go on forever. If this report signals the end of his career, it will be the end of an era.

Just my purely un-medical opinion, but he recently underwent surgery on his carotid artery.

That’s not good, at least as I understand it.

Both my dad and an aunt had blocked carotid arteries, and their conditions deteriorated rapidly after surgery on them. My aunt went completely blind and my dad - well, his health plummeted, and he began having strokes and throwing clots right and left.

I remember hearing about Kennedy’s surgery and thinking “uh oh.” But we’ll see. I’m not a doctor, although I play one on the intertubes :P , so what do I know?
