Written by Asinus Asinum Fricat on May 24, 2008 – 9:26 am -I love a good quiz, particularly a culinary one. Test yourself! It’s Saturday. I’ll post the answers same time tomorrow!

2) Have you ever noticed some food labels with a circle with the letter ‘U’ inside? The question: What was the first national brand name food to carry this seal of approval?
3) Like other greens, this one descends from wild cabbage that originated in Asia Minor, though it is known for it’s popularity in Scandinavia, Germany, Holland and Scotland. It was brought to the United States in the 17th century by English settlers. It is now a favorite in the southern United States where it has been considered a poor man’s food. With long ruffled leaves that resemble large parsley sprigs and hues that vary from lavender to chartreuse, it has a mild cabbage-like taste and delicate texture. It can grow in colder temperatures and withstand frost — which actually helps produce even sweeter leaves. It can also grow well in the hot weather in the southern United States and in poor soil. It is an excellent source of vitamin A, folic acid, and vitamin C and contains both protein and fiber. Name this green.

Damn. I have test anxiety. I need more time to take the test!
What happens if I flunk?
Give it your best shot, and take your time!
I’m scared, AAF!
Where and when is the test going to be administered? Are we to provide answers in our comments?
I know at least three answers. No. 1, I would guess Spain. Who knows why. No. 2, Hebrew National Hotdogs? No. 3, collard greens or mustard. No. 4, cola in Mexico, coffee in Finland, beer in Ireland, wine in Luxembourg. No. 5, basil or parsley. No. 6, no clue. No. 7, tomatoes? not sure. No. 8, Ireland seems the most obvious, but I’m guessing Belarus. No. 9, banana or plantain. No. 10, Israel. Mostly guesses, but there you go.
Sounds like pretty good guesses to me. Smarty pants
Did I get Mexico right?
Yes.
No. 3 may also be kohlrabi. No. 7 sounds more like the potato. Not sure about that one.
Neither.
Heh! I already flunked your test.
But I heard a funny story on NPR one day about the Chinese folks and kosher.
Recently they have started producing some kosher foods, and when one of the American company executives visited the factory there was a lot of confusion, because the Chinese executive did not know how to make the table kosher.
Kind of sad, in its own way.
True story.

Potato pies, potato soups, potato dumplings, potato fritters, potato vodka…you get the drift!
