Ethanol from corn is a stupid financial proposition, as you know. Ethanol from sugar cane is another story: better yields, yes, but it also means deforestation en masse, and that is wrong, very wrong.

In an interesting coincidence, I just last night came to the episode of "The West Wing" (in my niece's and my long march through the entire series) called "King Corn."

The story centers on the candidates for the next presidential election, and we see each of the leading Democratic contenders make a commitment to ethanol. They call it "taking the pledge" and every one of them knows ethanol is a huge scam. Figures are cited about how a gallon of ethanol costs a gallon of petroleum to produce.

Only one candidate dares to oppose ethanol while campaigning in Iowa: the Republican frontrunner.

Well, it's a fantasy show. But it made the ethanol problem very, very clear.
