Friends,
My daughter is getting married in March or April of next year. She is marrying her long time friend-they are both 30. She’s in TX, I’m in WA. We need some input into what makes a wedding special. It’s not money or flash, I know a few things. but what do you think?
What weddings have been special to you? We do have the option of indoors or outdoors.
Thanks for your input.

The cake. I always remember the cake and interestingly, my favorite has been an extraordinary carrot cake with buttercream icing wedding cake. Sounds odd perhaps, but it was abslutely memorable.
Also the night before – the best night befores are very, very warm and fun.
Oh, the cake we had was a wonderful spice cake with butter creme icing. With a layer of our plaid in butter creme icing over all.
Carrot cake sounds absolutely delicious, I’ll pass this along.
Thanks!
oh oh oh, spice cake!
my gawd, you just made my mouth water.
whatever you all choose, though, the cake is crucial, imo.
all else should pale!
You are so right. I hate those namby-pamby white cakes they usually serve at special events.
I WANT something that says “This is a Special Event—Be Glad You Are Here—ENJOY!”
My favorite weddings were outdoors affairs – my two nephews married in Oregon…here are some pics:

The weather in San Antonio in Spring can be very unpredictable – really awful or beautiful, so that may be an issue.
But with such a rich Hispanic heritage there, I highly recommend mariachi music, margaritas and Mexican food!
Second that – if the marriage is in San Antonio, take advantage of the Hispanic heritage.
Personally, I suggest tamales, but that might be because I’m having them for dinner.
I was just at my niece’s wedding. The key aspects of its tremendous charm were its outdoor location (in a city park), its simplicity and modesty, and its sincerity.
There was no show–the bride had a very pretty dress, but it was Not A Fancy Wedding. It was tasteful, which in these times means modest.
It’s an enormous amount of work if you’ve invited many guests, but I’d rather see handmade things on the tables — wildflowers in pretty glass jars instead of formal arrangements, that kind of thing. However, my daughter eloped and my son isn’t married, so I’ve never “done” a wedding myself. Take this as an outsider’s perspective.
My sister was married outdoors in a friend’s huge back yard. She and her husband’s sister and her friend did all the decorating, made the cakes and the food for the buffet. Another friend made the little birdseed packets (instead of rice) that the guests threw after the ceremony.
They had it late in the day so that the reception was candlelit. It was very beautiful, and no one had any idea how little it cost.
Sigh…loved my wedding…(marriage was a bit of a let down but you get that!)
We had it in the grounds of a fabulous old stately house (part of the university and therefore free) – the ‘reception’ was a party at a friends house with a buffet organised by the rellies. I made huge crepe-paper flowers with a friend to decorate everywhere and it all looked stunning. I had a fantastic time as did everyone else
