Looks like our regular proprietor is busy, so I will open.

It is with great sadness to tell you that my little friend, who graced this opening page the other time, is now gone. Her owners decided that they did not need young female cats and took her to be put down. I found this out yesterday. Thus, in her honor, no picture at all.

On a happier note, fresh zucchini and cucumber (in separate dishes, the zucchini cooked with tomatoes, onion, and some oregano and garlic), and the cucumber just fresh with a little salt. The zucchini and cucumber were provided by my neighbor across the street, who goes by the nickname of “Preacher”. The pork ribs will be done in a little while, and also the corn that I am roasting in its husks on the grill with the ribs. Time to jabber! Warmest regards, Doc.

Doc, my sympathies on the loss of your little friend. Why do stupid people do things like that?

With regard to being busy, I had changed the posting time to 6 pm Central, one hour later in the evening, so it was scheduled to launch shortly. No worries, however! Glad you are on top of it!

Oh heavens, no, don’t apologize. I didn’t announce a time change, so you did absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. And I appreciate your watching out for the site. Sincerely so.

I am really angry and hurt, but I will not divulge this to them. She belonged to them, as much as any creature can belong to anyone, and not to me. I had told them that I enjoyed her visits, and that she did not bother me. But they did not ask me to take possession of her when they made their decision, and I can see the logic.

She would have spent a lot of time over there, just a residential street away, and they did not want to be bothered. So they made their decision.

The more fundamental question is why people have the belief that they can just to choose to end a life for a being that they take in willingly and openly. Then it becomes a bit of a nuisance, so time to die. I have issues with the idea of “disposable” pets.

People should think through the idea of taking on a pet. They are feeling creatures, just as we are. They want nothing more than to perform their biological functions to perpetuate the species, but they also have a peculiar affection for us humans. I am not sure that anyone understands it fully.

That does not mean that a pet who is in bad health and in pain should not be put down. Far from it. I consider it the ultimate act of love to do it myself, not pay a vet to do it, when the end is near and continuation is painful, with no chance of recovery. And yes, I bawled my eyes out every time, but knew that I had done the right thing. The pets in questions were in a loving environment, remembering and smelling what little they could, feeling secure and loved. There was no time for any pain to be detected, just oblivion.

That is a far distance from a pound, or even at the vet, where all of the animals are frightened, nervous, and full of adrenaline. Then they get a vein intruded with a needle, which frightens them more. Then they get an injection that makes their senses go nuts, and then they breathe their last. This is so horrible that I am now weeping. I understand that no everyone has the place or the tools for that, and in the absence of that, find a very sympathetic vet who will give you antianxiety drugs for your pet first. Hell, maybe some for you, too.

My method, as barbaric as it sounds, is gentler, faster, more humane, and, if it is possible to understand, more loving.

Would that those who love me could be allowed to do so, but they would go to prison. Sorry for the raw emotion, but I am very disturbed.

Thank you, my friend. Dinner is not going to be eaten tonight. It did not hit me with the full significance until I was well into cooking tonight. Everything into the refrigerator for tonight, I am just not hungry. Warmest regards, Doc.

I am bawling out my eyes now. That was the sweetest, most caring, and wonderful statement that I have ever heard. No wonder I think of you as a friend. You are sensitive. Warmest regards, Doc.

Sorry for my absence, guys! Telephone problems of a very strange kind – I’m still on dial-up (but not for long woohoo!) and on a very strange phone plan, and once I went over so many times logging in and so many minutes on local, I was being charged 25 cents a minute or something. Yikes!

But, after days of looking where I could *call* to change this, I finally hit paydirt this morning.

The phones here are a mess. When I call someone, half the time, they find someone other than me on the line. Static is a huge problem, as well.

I think someone sniped these lines somewhere along the way.

She was a nice, friendly, and loving little cat. I never named her, because she was not mine. But I did appreciate her company, and from her purring (she was a very quiet purrer, but did purr) and her licking my hands, I think that she appreciated mine. Warmest regards, Doc.
