Making an apple pie for dessert. Buffalo burgers that we grilled earlier this week with new potato oven fries and a salad of mixed greens with flowers and a garlic/ginger/rooster/lime dressing.

Thanks! I wish I’d see some moose like Translator’s Teena and Geoff, but I suppose no such luck.

They have been so busy that they have not sent any pictures yet. She told my yesterday that when they get home that she will, and they are out of computer link range for the next few days. We will have to be patient, but I suspect that it will be worth it. By the way, AK is Alaska, and AR is Arkansas. Happens all of the time, but remember that Arkansas has no “K” in it. Warmest regards, Doc.

YOU are so funny! Thanks! I’ve been and lived in AK and AR and both have places I would go back to and places I would never set foot in again!
              What about YOU???

I just heard a really sad report that fish and wildlife killed 14 adult wolves and 14 pups to sustain a caribou heard. Why didn’t they at least send the pups south to Wolf Haven in WWA? We would have taken care of them! I am crying!!!
You all, since the endangered species act has been lifted on wolves in Yellowstone, in 119 days 108 wolves have been slaughtered.
Doc, your wife and son went to Alaska in part to see the wolves, right? This is what is happening. It’s so horrible.
In 76 I got to hear the wild wolf pack sing to each other up really close and I can’t imagine this happening. They are such shy and intelligent beings. I am sorry caribou herds are being wiped out but it is man that is the problem not wolves. They are opportunivores.
          This is a rant. Sorry.

Believe it or not, there are wolves living along the border of Arkansas and Oklahoma. I used to drive along that border to get to work — this was several years ago — and one jumped in front of my car one day. I was stunned. An acquaintance whose husband is a highway patrol guy who works out that way told me that her husband had seen them, too.

I know that red wolves are native to the area, and it may have been a red wolf. Possible.

            Beautiful, beautiful animals!

Yes, beautiful animals that nobody likes because hunters compete with the wolves. Hunters want trophies and wolves want food. Hunters 10-Wolves 0. It happens all the time. I hate, hate, hate it!
When I drove the northern route from Austin to Washington state, I saw wolves and/or coyotes in OK, NB, CO, WY, and OR. The sightings along the roads were really cool. They are really intelligent and worth saving.
Ya know, what about the hawks devastating the mouse population in all those states? Isn’t that a problem for the hunters of mice??????

Gawd, more hawks, please! The mice could drive you half-mad!

              O/w, agree …

I wish that the red-tailed hawk that lives in one of the trees along my alley would eliminate the colony of rats that seems to have established itself somewhere near my house. The Demon dog (my blue heeler) has killed two rats so far - and they are HUGE ones! Each one that he has killed has weighed at least 4-5 pounds, and measured 8-9″ from nose to base of tail. Demon is a fearsome hunter, but I’d really rather the hawk did the killing. He brings them to me, and acts really proud of himself. Ick. I’m the one who gets to pick up the body and put it in the trash where it will end up in the landfill, where it belongs. I don’t like rats living that close to me…Mice I don’t mind, but rats..Ick.

Oh, honey, I hope you can get the city to help you get rid of them. When I lived off of Garland Road in the late 70’s, the city came out and set traps for the rats and they were gone in two weeks. Call them.
Hope you are doing better today. Sending you good vibes.

Oh, BTW, I’ve had moose sausage in Alaska and cooked bear and loved caribou jerky and pulled more salmon out of the Yukon than you can imagine. Heard the slap of a beaver tail, panned for gold in a cold mountain stream. It’s a beautiful and perplexing state.

My hands smell delicious. I just finished cutting up a basket of perfectly ripe peaches, the kind you eat standing over the sink with juice running down to your elbows.

                YUM!

Peaches, Kate, yum is right. We have a fresh home made apple pie ready to cut tonight. Smells delirious! Made it with Fiji, Carmelo and Pink Lady apples from eastern Washington brought over Thursday. The Rainier cherries are looking good, too…next week for cherry cobbler.
