I made a wonderful Lamb Madras last night. Let’s see..I caramelized 1/2 a yellow onion with 2 diced shallots in olive oil in a cast iron dutch oven, added 3-4 whole cloves, a star anise, 1 Thai green pepper, 1 crushed dried red pepper without the seeds, sauteed a pound of lamb stew meat, added a tsp of Mai Ploy red curry, some turmeric, some curry powder, about 4 T tamarind juice, sea salt and sugar to taste, chopped broccoli, 3 small chopped german gold potatoes, other veggies(I can’t remember what), kept adding hot water to make it a sauce, Thai basil and Holy basil sliced, cooked until tender and served over some steamed basmati rice with Naan.

I’ll be wearing hats for the next month. Come, join me and celebrate the worst haircut in history! I look like an army recruit.

I seriously thought about buzzing my head the other day. Do I color or not color, do I streak or not streak? Do I go la natural with icky grey streaks or not? I feel better with color in my hair, but, but, but it’s so natural to go natural!
          What to do?

If you go see my haircutter, you won’t have to worry about what to do with your hair. You won’t have any!

Been there and done that!! I told a hairdresser one time, “I am swimming this summer, can you give me a shorter haircut?” Well, she sheared me! ICK, it was months before I felt like a girl again.

I think my hairdresser and yours are partners in crime, mango-cita. I went for my SECOND haircut this year (whoop!) and asked for a “trim” on the top and to “clean up” the back and sides….and the best I can say about my new do is that it will be nice and cool..
The disadvantage of hair re-growth after chemotherapy is that it is coming back more vigorously in some spots than in others! I tried to cover the emerging gray with L’Oreal - and it did a good job, until the other spots started growing exuberantly, with even more gray than before.
It looks like L’Oreal and I will be making friends again very soon.
One good thing about hats - they do protect the lily-white skin of my face from the sun!

Today’s frugalness: making banana bread to use up the rapidly browning bananas. That’s one less-desirable side effect of keeping the house temperature high to reduce the AC cost — fruit goes bad much faster and you can’t refrigerate the bananas because the peels turn black.

Unsettling discovery: My hands are now giving me enough trouble that it’s very difficult to juggle my beloved heavy glass mixing bowl one-handed while I scrape the batter into the loaf pan. I dropped it to the counter a couple of times, not far enough to break it, but enough to make an unholy mess with spatters.

“Duh” moment: As I was struggling with the bowl, I thought that I really needed to see about getting a lighter weight batter bowl with a handle for just such occasions. The lightbulb went on over my head. I put the bowl down. I thumped myself on the forehead. I went into the spare room where I have a set of shelves holding rarely-used cooking equipment, and I brought out the box containing the brand-new set of Melamine batter bowls — with handles — that I’d bought for next to nothing at Costco three or four years ago, long before I broke my hand. Problem solved!

I love banana bread. We use bananas and pecans down here in our bread and I can eat a whole loaf. My friend makes a zuchinni and beet bread. I’ve never tasted it but it sells well at the deli.

              Kate,
I’m so sorry you are having these problems. I have a wonderful melamine bowl I’ve had for about 40 years. Got it at a factory in Oak Cliff that made the stuff in the 60’s. They took all the leftover colors and molded them into mixing bowls. I think I paid 75 cents for the bowl in 1967! I stlll have it and use it. They are great and lightweight enough for us oldsters to use. My right wrist is getting really bad.
