Like almost everyone else in the southeastern US, I am staying glued to weather updates today. I won’t say much about Hurricane Gustav, because, really, what is there to say except…

well, there isn’t anything to say. Just light a candle for New Orleans and hope the people I know there are safely on their way northeast. Hope that everyone affected has a way out and takes it.

At any rate, this morning I saw this nifty little solar energy calculator on Weather Underground. Put in your address or your latitude-longitude, information on size and efficiency of solar panels you are considering, and it will tell you how much energy you can expect to generate. Cool!

Can you imagine if we could harness the power of a hurricane and convert it into electricity?

The Cuban weather service said one of its stations measured a gust of 204 mph (340 kph), the highest ever recorded.

Oh, and by the way, here is something for George Bush to take note of:

The government reported some minor injuries. But hurricane deaths are rare in Cuba, where evacuations are well-organized and begin early.

I woner if it would be possible to capture any energy from a hurricane. That’s an unbelievable gust!

I think I’m doing it wrong. I was mortified by the measly amount of solar energy I could capture here.

I must be doing it wrong, though, because I got the same figures when I tried it for Dallas.

I don’t know anything about the size of solar panels or the make – and by just guessing, the best I can come up with is running one CFC light bulb!
