drchelo,
That made me cry and I am ashamed of not thinking what you all are going thru. I worked at the shelters in Austin during Katrina and it was so sad. I'm worried about all our friends on the Gulf and I am sick to death for the beautiful city of Galveston. We were just there in late May and it was so beautiful and actually pleasant in the lower 80's. I spend as much time there as I could when I lived in Austin and my family vacationed there when I was growing up. We were there the week before Carla and the motel where we stayed was just gone after she left.

OMG, I forgot about you all, the emergency room and Ike.

It's horribly humid here, too. It started being hurricane-style humid yesterday. I actually turned the air conditioner on so I could get some sleep.

Scotia, I think I'd rather be exhausted working with you than exhausted doing what I'm doing..just came home from a nine hour shift at the Clinic.
Besides the usual crazies, we had some of the first wave of evacuees from Ike who had gotten away without their meidicine, those who had minor injuries suffered during the preparation for the evacuation - splinters from putting up boards, lacerations from flying debris....they drove five hours with these injuries and didn't want to go to hospitals, and they heard of CareNow...and so they came. For a place that is pretty hard-ass about taking insurance, private pay up front, no medicaid or medicare, if those who came in were evacuees, we just treated them like we'd treat anyone else, just not charging them.
They were stressed, tired, wet, and smelly. Some did not know where they would stay as the shelters were full, and some were hoping one of the churches would open its sanctuary for them. They needed a bath, a hot meal, and a quiet, still place to sleep.
My shift was supposed to end at 9 PM, but we kept the doors open until they stopped coming in. The kids were cranky and hungry. Thank goD that we have flat screen television sets that show "G" movies to hypnotise the toddlers and get them to sleep. But at some point, we had to get them out of the clinic as we had to clse down.
I was so glad to get to my home. Not much rain yet, but the air is thick, hot, and still. At midnight, it's still in the 90's with 90% humidity. My cool home and bed with cool sheets after a shower sounds positively heavenly right now. I'm tired, but not as tired as some of the poor souls I met tonight.
Even the hypochondriac idiots were abashed at their complaints that were so minor, compares to those who were really suffering.

It's supposed to be about 40 tonight. :-) Good luck to all the people who have to go thru Ike!

I am exhausted! Canning is a real elaborate process when you make organic from scratch, but IT IS SOOOOO GOOD!
I still have to do the corn for freezing. The pizza will be my reward!

Great! I was hoping for your sanity, my dear. What about the slacker? Has she figured out that she needs to pull her weight?
