I’m loving on my new little friends, the parakeets. I’ve named the male what I always name my blue male parakeets: Ernest, Ernie for short. He’s my third Ernie.
My female, however … I’m torn. Genevieve? Beatrice?? Cassandra? *Tiffany*????
That is so wonderful. I really enjoy birds in the house. I’ve always, always wanted an African Grey. Close to having one, but no, it didn’t happen. They are so sweet!
I’ve had birds since I was a kid - parakeets, doves (which I really miss having), zebra finches. But the temp was so unpredictable at my old place that I didn’t think I should keep them.
The zoo people, though, gladly gave me these guys - they were in the reptile house with large tortoises and all kinds of loose lizards, including South American skinks - I just thought we had skinks here.
They’re very pleasant and friendly. I suppose my dogs are an improvement over the roaming lizards in their opinion.
They spent the afternoon on the back porch with me today and had a great time.
I absolutely love little parakeet feet! They are so careful where they walk and their feet are sooooo sweet. Oh my!
I am so glad that you took these guys. They are much better off with you and the puppies rather than the reptiles….ick.
When I was small my Mom captured a parakeet that had escaped from someone else. We named him Petey and he LOVED my Dad. Dad smoked and read in bed at night. Mickey would walk up and down my Dad “talking” to himself and moving his head from side to side as if he was not happy with my Dad. He had such a personality. My Mom would cough and Petey would imitate her. It was so cute.
Ohhh! I am experimenting today on cake recipes. I just got this nice Wilton mini-muffin pan. 2 Dozen mini-muffins can be made at a time. I thought-with all the places I take a dessert, why not some mini-muffins? It’s neat and clean, someone can just take one or two and eat them, no fork needed! Yes! I’m on to something here! My first try is an Earl Grey Seed Cake with Confectioner and Tea Icing. I’ll let y’all know how it goes tomorrow!
I just had a meat and potatoes meal - a small baker with a bunch of garlic and parsley and yogurt, and a bit of buffalo with a ton of buffalo gravy. mmm.
I can’t wait to hear how your cake turns out - crazy about Early Grey - I like that Lapsaung Souchang )?????) too, maybe even more.
My sweetie is currently roasting peppers, all sorts of hot peppers in olive oil in the oven. The house is full of the smell….it’s wonderful! He’s making Texas Red later this season and a good tomatillo sauce for some Spanish/Mexican/Ecuadorian/Argentinean dishes later this year.
We’re having steamers with lemon butter and a salad tonight.
I think your tater with buffalo sounds great!
I had a terrific sandwich at a place called The Bent Elbow in Silverton the other day. It was so good and should be very easy to replicate. Grilled portobello mushrooms cut into chunks, sweet sun-dried tomatoes, feta cheese, grilled purple onions, and a garlicky sauce all rolled into a tortilla.
We ate there again today and had absolutely killer apple pie made by a master at the pastry arts, an anonymous lady who knows how to bake at 9300 feet. Oh man. I will regret eating that pie but I think it was worth it.
Today we went in search of ghost towns. It was snowing in the mountains, which made for interesting driving, but the air temps were in the 40s so I wasn’t too terribly worried about skating off the side of a cliff. We found a neat old town called Animas Forks, complete with some buildings in various states of disrepair, and visitors including a family: Mom in shorts and Crocs with a blanket around her shoulders because she didn’t know they were visiting the North Pole; daughter in jeans and skimpy t-shirt that didn’t quite meet her jeans in the middle; Dad who was dressed appropriately and even had a hat on; and two lovely friendly dogs who romped and played and rolled in the grass and had a wonderful time.
I had a hilarious conversation yesterday about inappropriate dressing behavior.
It was a woman whose husband is from Corpus Christi. She said that, while we all have been strolling around in tee shirts, he’s been walking around with a coat and hat on because we’ve been in the 40s and 50s in the morning. She also had to kick him out of the bedroom because he turned the heater on. He thinks he’s in Canada!
My oldest brother’s family (in Corpus Christi, as well) is like that. None of them have ever seen snow (except that fluke in 2004 when it snowed there), and his wife used to come up here in the middle of summer (110 temp, etc) and say “Oh it’s so nice and cool here!”
I had a lunch date with a guy! We went to the Japanese place and had soup, egg rolls, gyoza and sweet and sour veggies. We spent three hours visiting and eating. I had a great time.
By the way, Bill did deposit the money and with my car sale I am good for a long time. My social security pays the rent so that is cool.
He is an old friend who spends the summer in Canada. When he returns we lunch and he catches up on all the summer gossip. I have been told that he fancies me, but I love the single life.
Real cute! He is a big Russian Jew gentleman and reminds me of Zero Mostrel. Nice guy and a wonderful cook. He is strictly catch and release type. Now this lovely lady has a crush on me and it is being taken under consideration.
Sneaked in this morning while Bill and Lucy are still asleep. We went out and ate Greek food at Ziziki - yum! We had salad with feta (good, but not as good as Lefty-Coast-Goat Feta, I had lamb in a yogurt sauce, Bill had some other kind of lamb (both dishes with LOTS of garlic), and Lucy had a salmon grilled with lemon and olive oil and did I mention garlic? And there was rosemary scent somewhere in my lamb dish, and mint somewhere in the yogurt sauce, and since we were all sharing bits of each other’s plate, it was hard to tell where one dish ended and the next one began - but it was wonderful, we ate too much and had a delightful time.
They are still asleep (I hope - they got up awfully early yesterday), and I don’t know what we are going to do today, but I’m sure we’ll have a wonderful time.
biscuit - what AM I going to do with you? I go away for ONE DAY, and you come home with two rescued parakeets? Lucky birds, and lucky biscuit - lucky that they were not looking for someone with “Easy for homeless animals” tatooed on her forehead and the zoo had a couple of wart hogs that needed homes…
What would houndie grrl say then? What would the tree frogs say about wart hogs?
sheeesh.
I may be gone for a week, and biscuit will end up with a zoo at her house..
Please do get your brother Bill to let us know that you are doing well. Our thoughts are with you all the way.
I’ll try to keep Biscuit’s penchant for animal rescue in check, she’s talking about lemurs FGS!
We’re going to teach the parakeets to say, “No, No, No more!”

Decisions, decisions.
What color is she? That will tell you her name. BTW, when I was growing up, we named our male parakeets Mickey!
She’s a lovely mix of pale yellow, light green and sky blue. She’s a pretty girl!
If she sings, how about Calliope?
That could work! That or Caldonia.
They’re both singers. I love having keets again - haven’t had them in several years. They’re rescues!

omg, that sounds fabulous!

It was such a nice basic meal, and the buffalo makes a killer gravy with no additions at all.
mmm to your dinner. Someday when I quit renovating (yea right) I’ll put my cooking hat back on …
Oh, you will. I have confidence in you!

As for your date, dish, mango dish!!

oooo, he fancies you! And he’s Canadian.
Sounds like a catch to me.
Real cute! He is a big Russian Jew gentleman and reminds me of Zero Mostrel. Nice guy and a wonderful cook. He is strictly catch and release type. Now this lovely lady has a crush on me and it is being taken under consideration.
oooo, spicy!
Not The Faux Zero Mostel, but your lady friend.
You naughty girl!

I love little Ernest and Calliope! And they’ve taken right to the place, to the point of scolding the houndgrrl for looking at them too much.
Beware, I’m scheming on a lemur!!

LOL. Biscuit needs to come live with me. Oh what a zoo we would have!
