Hey Guys,

We had a GREAT time. The Yurt was wonderful.

Very luxurious and had a heater and a mirror and a locking door. How nice. Friday was rainy setting up, but Saturday and Sunday were really nice, sunny during the day and clear and cold at night. We saw thousands of start at night!

Sunday evening we did the alien razor clam dissecting thingy and had great eating. What a way to celebrate our 5th anniversary!

When I get the link to the video of the night dig on Saturday on YouTube, I’ll pass it along.

Once you get razor clams prepped. Fix a pan with half flour and half white corn meal. Dredge clams in this then drop in a mixture of eggs. buttermilk, tabasco-sea salt-freshly ground black pepper to taste. Dredge in Panko crumbs and cook in peanut oil in a skillet until golden brown on both sides. Delicious!

I’ve never had razor clams, but I’ve heard about them for years.

How do you dissect a razor clam?

Well, I didn’t want to go there, but you place them in cold water to pump out the sand, then pour boiling water over them to pop open the shells. Then comes the fun part, take this alien looking thing out of the shell and cut up the zipper and the intake, then cut out the lungs and pulps, cut off the foot and squeeze the stomach out of it until you can cut that off, finally cut up the foot until it lies flat then scrape off the icky alimentary canal.
        Well, you asked!

If you want a visual just type razor clam into youtube and you’ll find a source.
I’m going for butter clams the next time we are on the coast! They are yummy!

See, I knew there was a reason that shrimp is the only shellfish that I eat. :)

            Kate,

Butter clams? I don’t want to even imagine how wonderful they’d be. I’ve never even heard of them.

            Lucky you!

The prepared clams look dee-lish, Scotia! The dissection part sounds a bit complex. Is it the “foot” that you eat, or do you cut it up to readch the alimentary canal and then discard the food muscle?
What a great way to spend a weekend, especially a Special Event weekend!

            drchelo,

I KNEW that you would ask this! The foot is cut up the middle so it spreads flat and you can just flick the alimentary canal off of it, kinda like deveining a shrimp. Same canal!
The foot, now lying flat can be dipped and breaded and gently fried. It is considered the best part.
