I used to make over $100,000 a year, and I deserved it because I am a talented scientist with insight into both the chemistry of difficult systems, but also good, fast ways of analyzing those systems. I am Dr. Mass Spec, Dr. Problem Solver, and Dr. I can solve your problems.

But that did not matter. After a bogus accusation of committing a crime (one that I did not commit), I have been out of work since April 2006. That does not do much for self esteem.

I have had a few bites for employment, but then the leads dry up and disappear. No help there. Monster and the other sites are not much help.

I am good at what I do, and there are few who can solve the kinds of problems that I can. But I am Kryponite. Now one wants to take any sort of chance on me.

So now the love of my life and I have decided to divorce, because it is better for the boys in college. I seem just to drag them down financially. I do not mind that. Mrs. Translator is just looking out for her well being and that for our boys, so there is no quarrel on my part with her.

What bothers me is that they are better off if we are divorced. That is a very bad thing. It is not like I have a lot of income (actually none, just sucking down my retirement funds now) or that I am being mean (I am not, I will give at least half, if not much more, to Mrs. Translator to finish this thing).

The thing that bothers me is that we have to divorce for the boys to get grants for college and that the rules are much better for Mrs. Translator to file as “head of household” than “joint”.

I am very sad right now, and apologize for ranting. It just disturbs me that we have to divorce to compensate for a wrong felony charge that was recognized to be without basis. But if one loses one’s job, one is essentially worthless.

Warmest regards,

Doc

I am so, so sorry you all are going through this.

And yes, unfortunately, the way the American system is set up, the family gets – well, screwed.

    Take care of yourself, Doc.

You’re right that this system is f***ed up, Translator.
But you are wrong to think that you – with or without a job – are essentially worthless.
Please do take care of yourself, and know that you are among friends here.

        Thank both of you.

I consider you to be friends, and that matters very much to me.

        Crying regards,
