oldandnew

First United Methodist Church (1891) bell tower and the Harbert Center (1989), currently the tallest building in Birmingham.

I’ll be back more regularly soon. It’s been nuts around here. I miss you!

    Kate,

Welcome back. That is a beautiful tower. There was one in Austin that I loved to look at every morning on the way to work. Morning made it golden. :-)

There is something about tall buildings that I find magical. I don’t think I’m the only one – lookit all them big-ass cathedrals the Medievals were building all over Europe, and the honkin’ big buildings in the big cities…Love ‘em!

        drchelo,

Have you ever read Ken Follett’s “The Pillar’s of The Earth”? It is about the building and builders of one of those BAC’s (big-ass cathedrals)!
We just got a copy from the library. I haven’t read it in 20 years, but it was really fascinating. The cathedral is a real living character in the book.

Like you, Scotia, I remember reading it 20 years ago – Follett is one of my favorites, and yes, the cathedral is a living character. I may have to re-read it myself.
