Written by Translator on June 10, 2008 – 9:43 pm -Crossposted at DailyKos.com.
Well, we have discussed the origin of visible light, its place in the electromagnetic spectrum, and some of the physiology of human vision. This installment will wrap up the visible part, and next we will consider the ultraviolet.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum V - Visible Light

Now that we are past infrared, we can talk about something that we actually can see. Visible light occupies the region from about 400 nm (nanometers) to 800 nm, with violet on the short side and red on the long. Thus, red blends into infrared at around 800 nm.
Like most EMR, visible light may be generated by a hot body (the so called “blackbody” radiation) wherein the frequency distribution maximum is determined by the temperature. This is why we use terms in photography having to do with temperature, because the distribution is a function of temperature. As the temperature of the emissive body increases, the wavelength decreases. That is why stars with relatively low surface temperatures appear red, while hotter ones, like our sun, are yellow, and very hot ones appear blue. Read more »

I do not know if this is appropriate for this site, but since it is a slow night I will give it a try. If this sort of topic is not for here, just let me know and I will restrict my posts to those more directly related to cooking. Thanks!
